“Education about insurance and related issues is good for the Insurers, the Agents, and the Insured; when all three have their needs met, everybody benefits”
- Ernesto the Insurance Geek
Ernesto is a mild mannered insurance guy from Ohio. He works in the corporate compliance area of a small P&C (Property & Casualty) company where his days are spent making the world safe for his policyholder customers. Ernesto and his staff make sure forms, policies and internal company software are in sync with state and federal law and our customers meet all legal requirements. In a past life, Ernesto ran a small multi-line insurance agency; if you ask him about agency related issues, you’ll probably get an opinion. Since his work is complicated and tedious, he uses this forum as his creative outlet.
His goal is to uncomplicate the insurance purchasing process by explaining insurance issues, coverage and policy language. He hopes you find something useful and leave him a comment. If you’ve never blogged before and would like to contribute an article, leave a note.
Agents are welcome to leave a link to their agency website.
Ernesto is big on writing articles and smaller on WordPress. Any geek help would be appreciated.
As a firm believer in insurance professionals, Ernesto will always recommend the advise of local independent agents. This site contains links to insurance related advertisements; feel free to click them (that’s how he gets paid) but keep this in mind: one day you’ll need an insurance professional, why not give them the business today?
This forum is intended to advise, amuse, and inform about insurance and insurance related issues. The insurance industry is regulated at both the state & federal level, so it would be impossible to offer legal advise valid in all 50 states. Please seek advise from local insurance and/or legal professionals prior to making coverage decisions.
If you have a contribution, please leave a note; Ernesto respects the views of intelligent people, even if he doesn’t agree with them.

We had a hail claim on our roof three to four years ago and used the money to do other home repairs, we have since had another large hail storm and the roof needs to be repaired now. Is it fraud to put in a claim on this hail storm? We have a different insurance company in which we disclosed the old claim and not replacing the roof at that time.
thanks for your guidance.
Rob
Can an insurance broker be the agent who writes the policy on his/her own homeowner’s insurance policy???
My insurance adjuster came to my house on a claim i made for hail damage and cut me a check for the full amount. I went out and got some estimates and they came in cheaper then the amount my check was for. Would it be insurance fraud to pay a roofer and then keep the rest of the money?
Had an adjuster out and the wrote a check out for hail damage to my house and garage roof. The adjuster didnot look at the siding when they came out. I spoke with an ajuster on the phone and he told me that they wouldn’t send one back and to have a contractor check the siding and if he deams it damaged to send the bill and they will decide if they will cover it. What should I do to get this done? Is it legal for me to take pictures of the damage myself and send them to the insurance company Thanks
Heyak!
I am curious about what happens to a paid policy premium after/if the policy is returned before a “trial period.” Usually 30 days? I know the policy issuer returns it to the policy holder, but does the agent keep their commission on the sale?
Nope, canceled policy no commission :’(
So, The policy issuer refunds the money to the policy holder, and then has to chase the commission from the agent? I am curious about how much agent debt is out there, as I am nervous about getting it back. What kind of repercussions are there when it is not refunded, and how to companies police the returns?
