A Franklin County Ohio judge awarded Roman and Jennifer Costner $3 M in a dispute with Maronda Homes. Another judge ruled Maronda Homes has to pay the family’s almost $700,000 legal bill.
Court documents show the south side of the house wasn’t attached to the foundation and the wrong sized windows were installed leading to leaks then mold. The Costner’s $219,000 Reynoldsburg OH home was determined to be unlivable.
In Ohio, legal disputes are encouraged to be settled out of court. If they’re not, treble damages can be awarded. So $1M turns into $3M, just like that.
Was I shocked by this? No, Maronda homes do not have the most sterling reputation. Their quest to cut costs leads them to purchase the cheapest of the cheap in building materials. Most suppliers have good, better or best quality in supplies. Maronda seems to always find something cheaper than good.
What did shock me the people missing in action:
- Maronda Construction supervisors/inspectors
- City/County building inspectors
- Buyers home inspectors
I’d hate to say buyer beware for a new home, but in this case..
Back in my agent days, I’d get calls from builders looking for GL coverage. Out would come a ten page application. Why so much information? To find out who the subcontractors are. A house is only as good as the subcontractors who work on it. I’m guessing Maronda’s quest for lowering construction costs led to cheap subs. Keep that in mind the next time your looking for a contractor standing around outside of Home Depot.

Hello, I have a maronda home I’m so upset my siding has come off my home eight times. I’m done, I’m so done. I would like to know who was the attorneys in this case. I need to contact them I’m tired and very angry.
I recently bought what I thought was a brand new home with no problems. Boy was I in for a shock! I had found out through neighbors that my house was on fire during the construction phase. The fire was never diclosed to me or my wife. To make it worse they left fire damaged wood in the house and spray painted over it and covered it up with plywood!! They told me that they never had to disclose of it because it was a new house!! How is that even right. They will not do anything to make it right either. They are the rudest company ever. I am here for the next 21 months I am a active duty Marine and thought that buying a new home was a great idea.
Sorry to hear about your fire damaged house.
Yup, it took me by surprise when I read the local building codes about fire damaged studs; if the ‘charcoaled’ wood is only so deep, they can spray paint it with sealer type paint and keep on trucking.
Hopefully you can’t smell the burnt wood.
OMG!!! we must speak out and help others so they don’t fall prey to such terrible experience. It is like the girl who gets rape but fail to report it. The rapest goes on to rape another innocent victim. We must stop maronda from raping other innocent families. If I have known these crimes were committed by maronda I would not purchase my home. Remember maronda still continues to sell homes, think of how many innocent victims out there totally obvilious to all the corruption, mold, flawed workmanship, marred foundation, flooring, etc. lets all continue to tell our stories and shut them down. I am currently having to replace my front door due to poor insulation. They did not seal my door. now it is rotten and must be repaired.
sorry to hear about everyone’s problems with Maronda homes, but not suprised in the least….I actually worked for the company in Florida, and saw/heard these things going on….this company also has internal embezzlement problem whose expense is passed on to the customer…it’s amazing how much privately owned companies can get away with…
I have worked for Maronda for a few years. They treat their employees like crap. They won’t pay the standard IRS approved mileage reimbursement to them. They give them 400 a month to drive over 100 miles a day to job sites. This is why the problems with the homes are the way they are. Everything is cheap. [Editors note, I removed the name of the submittor .. dude the job market sucks. Don’t get yourself fired, even from a crappy job!]
Holy cow! My husband and I just put in an offer on a Maronda home in Marysville, OH. These stories and reviews are very scarey. I think it’s time to retract my offer!!
We have owned 9 homes. 7 were new construction( with one builder having installed a used AC compressor passed off as new) and 2 were built without fault or fraud. Both of these are Maronda homes. We continue owning our first Fl Maronda as a rental and our newer S.H Fl.model is owner occupied. I am an advocate of Maronda Homes and will never use another builder so long as Maronda is constructing in my community. I have seen 6 local builders go bankrupt in the last 3 years and two have been convicted of stealing clients funds while leaving the customer financially ruined with incomplete homes bearing multiple contractor liens aginst the emotionally devastated property owner. My view is that Maronda Homes is the envy of other builders because they can dominate the local market and this has a trickle down effect on Realtors, vendors, contractors & suppliers. Maronda stands strongly behind its warranty. Given the size of the company and volume of building there is going to be fault and error. I am thourghly satisfid with the design and economy I bought into and did opt to select their upgrade choices of tile and corian which were afforably priced
I have been affiliated with this Builder for 10+yrs in Florida. While most of you do nothing but complain about the “homeowner maintenance” issues you maybe chose not to do, I have many homeowners that love and maintain their homes. You do not buy a car and then not change the oil, why think you don’t have to maintain a home? I have complete faith in the homes we are building and am looking forward to my second “MARONDA HOME”, when I can decide which of the brand new designs I like best!! This Builder did not go bankrupt when it would have been easy to do so with this challenging market.. they stayed strong and have been there to provide service to their homeowners! Ask your friends that bought from other Builders who they call if they need service/warranty today!! This is a responsible builder. When you look at the number of homes built in the past 20+ years and the small percentage of “valid issues” that may have occurred, it seems unfair that you would be so quick to crucify a company. Not everyone likes Maronda, and that is too bad, but we are, and always have been the very best value for entry level homebuyers. Instead of wasting energy on bashing Maronda, why not stop into a community near you and take a look around!! Our homes are still the best deal going and WE ARE STILL HERE TAKING CARE OF OUR HOMEOWNERS!!! Now, go to our website, print your homeowners maintenance checklist and see how far behind you are.. cars need oil changes every 3,000 miles, what have you done for your house lately?
I’m a VERY HAPPY Maronda homeowner, also very satisfied with my home purchase!
I have nothing but possitive things to say
about my home construction and Maronda’s service dep’t.
You will always have people taking legal action for for their own finacial gain!
Wow. So many things I could start with. Lets start with the little things I have fixed my self. No network jack in the master bedroom which was supposed to be standard. Broken door stop in 2nd bathroom hidden in cabinet (is super glue that expensive?). Doors falling off there hinges at the door frames. Now onto the bigger stuff. Foundation crack lets water in because its above the water proofing. They came out and sealed it and it still leaks. Replaced my sump pump 3 times in two yrs because they get burnt up because they never shut off. Pitting in foundation. Sump pump piping on the outide of house finally busted. My house is 2yrs and 3 months old. No wonder they only cover a year warrenty, everything falls apart after that. My house is in the Galloway, Oh area so stay away!. Hows that quality construction for ya?
1st. of they build crap in Sebring Florida market, bottom line it all depends on the Construction Supervisor and the on site rep, once that hits a snag, your in for a huge amount of trouble, 2nd, they don’t stand by their warranty, if you call cob jobbing fix’s and taking short cuts OK, well then they stand by the crap like mold they put in your home, open up the walls and ceilings and look, you will be amazed and scared when you find what I have found. And their non sense 10 yr structural warranty is another joke, most of the sub contractors couldn’t or can’t work for reputable builders. Now since you claim they stand by their product, why did they pull out of Sebring Florida, they own over 120 lots and now there not paying the improvement district fee’s nor there property tax’s. I see the hand writing on the wall why don’t you
Well, I am in agreement with the “Crap” that Maronda builds.
We live in the Cincinnati Ohio area.
Where to start - the windows all on the second floor are smaller at the top of the window jam than at the bottom - we were told that was becuase of the house settling. REALLY - by the law of physics that is IMPOSSIBLE. Then we had a bowed wall, the back door would leak, our dishwahser was never hooked up, the yard was graded so poorly that we had a pond in our backyard with ducks and geese - Oh,and what a problem we had in getting all of these things fixed. It was a nightmare dealing with Marondas people. One of the bedrooms on the second floor has no heat/ac in it - but was told it was our imagination - there really is air flow. Hummmm, no wonder why when the door is closed it will reach 100 degrees in the summer. Oh, and to this day - 4 years later our heat and ac goes out once in the winter and once in the fall. So, we expect there to be some major repair twice a year with the furncace/ac unit they installed. We had an independant HVAC company come out and they were astounded at the poor instillation. You can close all the vents in the basement and it will still reach 60 degrees in the summer becuase there is so much lost airflow from the unit in the basement. Oh and of course there are the rude employees that love to tell you, you are crazy and complain more than any other homeowner they know. Yea, Maronda homes SUCKS. They are the worst builder, they have the worst customer service and we regret our home everyday. We bought the highest priced, largest home they make - we thought we were getting a good value - HARDLY. Buyer BEWARE of Maronda homes.
Hey “Current Maronda Employee” please explain to me how having no tar paper EVER placed under the shingles that have fallen off of my roof after only 7 years is a “homeowner maintenance issue” that we have somehow caused by our neglect? Were we supposed to time travel back to whan our home was being built and lay the tar paper ourselves? What about the interior doors that the laborers stood in a bathtub , then turned water on damaging the bottoms and installed anyway? Again, how is that a “maintenance issue”? Also, how about the improper installation of the sliding glass door in my kitchen causing it to completely shatter after 3 years? Any tips on how I could have prevented that? What about the fact that my driveway wasn’t dug out enough or laid with enough gravel to be properly paved? What about my kitchen floor that has hills and valleys in it? Please enlighten me as to how we could have “maintained” our home better so that none of these things happened. Also, my car has a 6 year 100,000 mile warranty. Maronda’s is 1 year. Your materials are cheap, and the contractors you hire to build are even cheaper. “Easily observable better value”? More like piece of crap house that you’ll have to sink tens of thousands of dollars into to make right.
I would not buy a Maronda Home if my life depended on it…..I would not support them. I worked there and I have never seen a place treat there employee’s so bad let alone give a crap about anyone else. They have hurt a lot of people!!
we did a rent to own on a model home in pataskala and we were in for a shocker. we had a hug shelf in the living room so when i went to go paint it i found out that there were 3 large holes bigger than a basket ball. they didn’t hook up the spair bathroom tub bc when my daughter was taking a shower all the water went to our finished basement it looked like it was raining in the basement, closet doors fell off too many times to count, cracks and leaks all the time, the siding fell off twice. we were told that there was also a fire in the house while they were building it, it was in the kitchen, we had black mold everywhere in the basement. the owner of the house had maronda come out and fix everything for us but we still had the black mold in the basement and cold air coming thur the floors. we loved the house but for what we were paying to rent it wasn’t worth it, so we moved out and built our own house in the country.
I had a maronda home built 20 years ago. I was living right next door and watched every day! I caught some problems right away as they were building and they fixed them promply! I have never had a single problem since it was finished and I can say that I absolutely love my home. I am reading all this and I am getting sick for the people who have had problems. I always thought I might use maronda again if I rebuild. NOW? I am wondering what happned to this company over these 20 years! I suppose, they are only as good as their subs and their on-site managers/contractors/inspectors in each area. Did they loose the best ones over the years? Are they building too many? Cuting too many costs?
I look around at my pretty home in Spring Hill, Florida and am amazed that so many people hate the company. What a shame. I will rethink building another Maraonda home. Thanks for sharing.
maranda homes in middleburg florida caution these guy do nothing but lie to future home owners jim marshal leads the group magille is his puppet mike chiellino 01-25-2011
I bought a Maronda home in pittsburgh 5 years ago. Generally it’s been good. It is very cheaply done but i paid a lot less for my home. I will say that my half wall that separates my kitchen from living room was installed crooked.. Maronda told my wife that it was an optical illusion until she put a glass of wine on it to prove it wasn’t level. I had mold coming into both my front and back doors.. they attempted to fix it but no such luck.. i could open my locked door using a business card.. no exaggeration either that is true.. so had to replace it. My sidewalk cracked and crumbled into pieces maronda blamed me for using rock salt but i never did. My heating bills are good as the insulation is done well. However the hvac system is not good because my home is too big for one furnace/ ac unit and my upstairs gets very little air to it so it’s cold in the winter and hot in the summer. As for the Maronda employee blaming homeowners for lack of maintence.. he is full of crap.. i felt like maronda employees had all gone to the same school of B.S. when it comes to problems. I had one maronda project manager when i first bought my home that was very good.. i later found that he was fired cause he cared too much. Overall it appears that my home is “fair” for the cheap price i payed. I say it appears because i pray no major problems aren’t lurking that i’m not aware of. My neighbors and myself have a saying about maronda.. “we sacrificed quality for square footage and so will you” If you want cheap but a lot for the money buy maronda.. if you want quality go custom built.. i guess the old saying is true when it comes to maronda.. ” you get what you pay for”
One thing that most people are missing in all these complaints ,is that it shows that the work force in todays market is what it is. A company is only as good as its employees are. People have no sence of pride in anything that they do. But don’t let their paychecks be late. This is not just for home building, its out there in almost anything that we buy ,or do! WE NEED TO DO A JOB AS IF WE WERE DOING IT FOR OURSELVES! (COME ON PEOPLE WAKE UP.)
My name is Mary Morgan and my fiance who was one of Marondad best workers was fired Tuesday. Along with 3 other high paid men. Maronda only wants to pay ppl $8/hr and doesnt care if they are on drugs. They only care about penny pinching while Ron Wolf (owner) buys golf courses. Their frame builders and kitchen cabinet buildera are in-experienced and some even do and sell drugs. File lawsuits. I am taking legal action. They fired my fiance with a bogus excuse and the truth is he was being paid more than minimum wage (bc he worked like a slave a min wage) til he showed his talent. Its a shame. That company should be ashames and quit.
Yes, there are many ppl today that dont take pride in their work. My fiance isnt one of them. The problem is, is that Maronda Homes doesnt want to find and pay the ppl that do take pride. When will thia company wake up and realize cheap labor wont save them. They need to spend the money and sell quality. They would save more money that way rather than cheap bogus labor and having to repair all their work (if they even do that) and pay lawsuit settlements. Take legal action now bc Maronda is going bankrupt. They filed Monday for Chapter 11 bankrupt protection so they can re-organize. File now while you still can!
I personally know the ppl building your homes. The frames, the roofs, the doors, the kitchen cabinets and let me tell you ppl your complaints are justifiable. I am telling the truth, you have a bunch of guys making $264 a week that do drugs or just dont give a crap putting your homes together. And the ones that do care are gone bc they cost $4 more an hr. With no benefits or bonuses and its sad. If ppl only knew what I know Maronda would be a has been. Put a stop to this robbery/false advertisement. And my fiance is so good he had a new job 4 hrs after being let go. I kid you not. What a joke. I am sorry to those who have been taken advantage of. Trully am sorry.
The true owner died and the company was left to his son. His father would be terribly disappointed to watch his company in ruins at the hands of his own son. Tssk tssk. Never pick quantity over quality. Especially with Maronda. They take cheap labor to a new extreme. Its like buying a home at “Fifty Cent General” the store that wishes it was “Dollar General”. Sad. Okay I am done. Gl
we bought a Maronda home in Ashley lakes north vero beach fl it is suppose to be a gated community haha the are No gates maronda told us when we bought they would be put on within 6 months , we found out there won’t be any gates put on so they lied to us and are still telling people the gates will be on soon. I won’t even go into all the things that were wrong with the house and now all the lies. DONT buy in Ashley Lakes North until they put the gates on.
We were thinking of buying a Maronda home in Trenton, OH. Does anyone out there have experience with the builders in this area? Thanks for any input.
Does anyone else have the same AC problem as I do. We purchase this house 4 years ago , there is a huge crack in the garage, our biggest problem is the AC unit. They said that the state requires a four ton unit for the Mt.Vernon size homes 29sqft. This home has never been cool despite everything we have done something is terribly wrong here, anyone with similar problems? A non related engineer came by he insisted the unit was way too small for this two story home. I see 1 flat homes in this complex with bigger size from Maronda Homes. Termostat set on 78 tempein home cannot go below 84. Some daus it’s a connstant 91 in here. Now my 91 year old M xti s ins t. n c cv Has anyone
buy the cheapest home you get the cheapest home. As far as a shoddy builder goes you have to do some diligence. The home inspector should have recognized shoddy construction but half of them dont know what they are doing. its easier to walk away from a sale then it is getting a shoddy builder to come fix their corner cutting construction.
I purchased a Maronda home in Johnstown, OH about 4 years ago. I had nothing but issues, some of which were taken care of, some were dismissed to “inadequate home maintenance”. The first issue I had was the master bathroom leaked and caused mold issues and the bathroom was tore apart for three months. I would say about every house in our development has had the siding blown off. Several of the houses I know of have had leaks down the fronts of their houses on the inside and one had a severe mold issue in their finished basement. I have had my back door replaced twice because the door frame was crooked and they can’t get it to sit right and it leaks. The last time I called them on it because the floor was rotting below the door they said it was poor maintenance. The guy that came and looked at it said it was due to the lack of caulking maintenance. That would have been fine if he hadn’t peeled the caulking off, then took pictures to show his manager and that is why they wouldn’t replace the floor. But when I showed them the fact that the bottom plate was exposed and water was coming that way, they said it wasn’t enough to cause any issues. I understand getting what you paid for, but general building construction should be held to a standard and structural things shouldn’t be an issue as frequently as they are. This is my second new built construction home by a builder and I never had the issues I have had with my current home. I have more issues, but just keep in mind what everyone says. I hear many of my neighbors complain about many different issues which could have been prevented if things were done correctly the first time.
My husband and I had our home built with Maronda and it took a long time for completion. Since moving in 2005, we’ve had our number of concerns that has built up to scary concerns. Sometimes I think the house is going to cave in, especially during thunderstorms. After five years, we’re still seeing fresh cracks coming from the ceiling downward! More and more cracks are in the stucko. Now I know that stucko will crack, but my goodness! Like all homes, the foundation is under a 10 year warranty and we would like it to be checked. I’ve tried calling several Maronda Homes phone numbers, but to no avail. I’m becoming desperate……can the Current Maronda Employee help? If the company is worth it, provide me with the right help!
BUYER BEWARE!!! We built our home 2005/2006. I am so disappointed, and angry. Our driveway, sidewalks, and front porch is crumbling and falling apart. The so-called concrete under the garage door has crubled so badly the gap is 2″. This moring we had snow drifts in the garage because the concrete has dissovled!!! We to were told we used to much rock salt, which we never used. Because the concrete is disovling on our front porch, rain water runs off the side of the porch, thru the cardboard walls in our garage. The walls are molded now, and the cardboard is falling apart. When it rains we have a steady stream of water flowing in the garage and now its stating to run in the basement. When the foreman came out he told us we must have poked a hole in the wall/cardboard. Anyone can see the water damage, and the staple they poked thru the cardboard is where the water started coming in. We have no insulation in our garage, they used cardboard for the walls. Our master bath is over our garage, needless to say it is freezing in our master in the winter, and burning up in the summer. We truned in a list several times to Moronda to fix, funny thing is when the new foreman came out he tells us our file is clean, we have nothing remaing to be repaired Really, how bout no caulk around anything in the house. Carpet that has to continually be strecthed, faucets that leak, we’ve replaced 4 faucets so far. Flooring that is damaged and has been since me moved in, and we are told to call rite rug who won’t do anything. Why did they install the cable jack under the thermostat in the middle of the family room wall? This is the cheapest house I have everseen in my life. BUYER BEWARE!!! Maronda is the worst home builder in America.
Our cabients don’t line up dishwasher does not fit and keeps tearing up the wall. I could go on and on… Just know that I would never buy a Maronda home again, and I will never say anything good about Maronda…
